Book Review-----GIRL WALKS INTO A BAR....COMEDY CALAMITIES, DATING DISASTERS, AND A MIDLIFE MIRACLE by Rachel Dratch
When I first read about Rachel Dratch's book, I had no intention of reading it. I am not a huge fan and the only time she has ever made me laugh was when she played Debbie Downer on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. But then I saw her on THE VIEW and the way she described her story changed my mind. And I'm glad I did. This book made me laugh out loud several times. There was one particular passage that had me laughing so loud and so hard that Troy came up from his Office to see what was going on. The girl is funny and she WRITES funny. This is not a Show Biz memoir. The first 50 pages of the book cover her upbringing and her days on SNL, but the crux of the book is her life as a single woman. She goes on some outrageously awful dates and seems to be a magnet for gay men looking to experiment. But she keeps on trying and sure enough when she's not looking, she meets a nice guy. This guy lives in California and she lives in New York City, so they have a very casual long distance relationship with no commitment. Until Rachel wakes up one morning and realizes that she's pregnant. This was a quick read and highly entertaining. Ms Dratch writes very honestly about being a woman in her forties thinking she will never meet "the one". She also talks about how difficult her life is in Show Business trying to find work. Ms Dratch is not ashamed to call herself out for being virtually uncastable and speaks honestly about her being "let go" from 30 ROCK. But what I have walked away with from the book is the strength that she showed in taking on having a baby at an age when most women are starting menopause. Not knowing if the baby's father wants to be an active participant in the child's life, Ms Dratch decides to move forward and take a chance. And the baby truly turns out to be a midlife miracle for her. GIRL WALKS INTO A BAR....is an incredibly fun book that also ends up being both heartwarming and hysterically funny. And I can now say that I am absolutely a fan of Rachel Dratch.
